RAWALPINDI: In a major boost for the newly-established PSL franchise, Rawalpindi Pindiz have announced the appointment of West Indies legendary fast bowler Courtney Walsh as the team’s Bowling Coach.

The Caribbean great brings with him decades of elite international cricketing experience and a wealth of fast-bowling expertise that is expected to significantly strengthen the franchise’s bowling unit ahead of the upcoming Pakistan Super League season.

A legendary playing career

Widely regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers in the history of the game, Walsh enjoyed a remarkable international career with the West Indies from 1984 to 2001.

During this period, he claimed 519 wickets in 132 Test matches, becoming the first bowler in history to reach the milestone of 500 Test wickets. He also picked up 227 wickets in One Day Internationals during his illustrious 17-year career.

Known for his consistency, patience, skills and guile, Walsh formed one of the most devastating bowling partnerships in cricket history alongside Curtly Ambrose. His outstanding contributions to the game earned him induction into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2010.

Coaching journey and experience

Following his playing career, Walsh transitioned into coaching and mentorship roles across international and franchise cricket. This will not be his first major coaching assignment at the international level. He served as the specialist bowling coach for the Bangladesh national team from 2016 to 2019, where he played key roles in the development of fast bowlers.

His coaching résumé further includes serving as head coach of the West Indies women’s team, a role he took on in October 2020. During his tenure, he oversaw the team’s series wins against Pakistan both home and away in 2021, and guided them to the semifinal of the 2022 50-over World Cup.

Walsh has also worked as a bowling consultant for Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League, managed the West Indies Under-19 side, served as a West Indies selector, and worked as a talent scout and fast bowling coach in the IPL with Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings).

What Walsh brings to Pindiz

At Pindiz, Walsh’s presence is expected to significantly strengthen the franchise’s bowling unit. Known for his discipline, tactical awareness, and deep understanding of fast bowling, he brings invaluable insight into pace bowling strategy, workload management, and player development.

His mentorship will play a crucial role in nurturing emerging talent while helping the team’s bowlers perform at the highest level in PSL 11, which is scheduled to run from March 26 to May 3 across six venues including Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Pindiz: A new era for Rawalpindi Cricket

The Rawalpindi-based franchise was officially renamed Pindiz in February 2026, signalling a fresh start for the side ahead of PSL 11. Acquired by Walee Technologies for Rs 2.45 billion, the franchise has aimed to establish a strong local connection with Rawalpindi’s street-smart culture.

The team will play its home matches at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, which is set to host 11 matches during the tournament, including a qualifier. One of the most anticipated fixtures will see Pindiz face Peshawar Zalmi on March 28 at Peshawar’s Imran Khan Cricket Stadium in what will be the venue’s first-ever PSL match.

With a legendary figure like Courtney Walsh now on board as Bowling Coach, Pindiz have signalled their intent to make an immediate impact in their debut PSL season.
