ISLAMABAD/ABERDEEN: A husband and wife from Aberdeen will this week be setting off on a 17,000-mile (27,000km) journey from the Arctic to Antarctica in an electric car.

Solar and wind energy will power the vehicle of Chris and Julie Ramsey for much of the trip set to begin this week. The couple will navigate into Canada, then head south through the United States and into warmer South American temperatures over ten challenging months.

The two will travel through Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, and Chile. They feel the journey can put a lot to the test, including their relationship.

Coming from Aberdeen, they would take supplies of the humble buttery – also known as a rowie or Aberdeen roll, the famous long-lasting local delicacy made of lard, butter, and sugar, to help keep their strength high.

The vehicle will have a wind turbine and double solar panels to generate power from the sun and wind. To handle rough terrain, it has also been equipped with oversized tyres.

There are also other modern facilities, including a coffee maker in the boot. Moreover, a drone launcher be present as well so the couple may document their travels.

Season-to-season

“Pole to Pole” is the first drive ever made from a magnetic North Pole point in the Artic to the South Pole in Antarctica, according to Ramsey.

No automobile, including a electric vehicle, has ever attempted this.

The duo has a history of breaking the odds. They were the first team to complete the 16,000-kilometer Mongol Rally from London to Mongolia in an electric vehicle in 2017.

Ramsey said “having completed the Mongol Rally has given me confidence that we can accomplish this.”

“We have put the proper measures in place and are working with the right people. With our passion and belief that if the car is capable, we can do it.
