BAKU:  Nuri Ozbagdatli, UNDP Climate Change and Environment Portfolio Manager for Europe and Central Asia Region, emphasized the critical importance of COP29’s success, stating that it will directly impact the outcome of COP30.

He highlighted Azerbaijan’s pivotal role as the host country for COP29, underscoring the significance of the event. He was speaking at a training Workshop on Building confidence and capacity in the preparation of Biennial Transparency Reports under Azerbaijan’s COP29 chairmanship. Ozbagdatli expressed UNDP’s honor in collaborating with Azerbaijan to develop its Biennial Transparency Report (BTR) and emphasized the organization’s commitment to ambitious, accelerated, and inclusive climate action over the next two years.

In November, Azerbaijan will host COP29, a decision reached during the COP28 plenary meeting in Dubai last December. Baku is expected to welcome approximately 70-80,000 foreign guests, solidifying its position as a focal point for global climate discussions.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The COP, comprised of 198-member countries, serves as the principal legislative body overseeing the Convention’s implementation. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP sessions are held annually, with the inaugural event occurring in March 1995 in Berlin, Germany.
