SHARM EL SHEIKH: The European Union (EU) has expressed disappointment over a lack of ambition on reducing carbon emissions in the climate agreement at the COP27 summit in Egypt on  Sunday.

The 27-nation bloc and other developed states had pushed for stronger commitments to reduce emissions in order to limit the global average temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius from pre-industrial levels.

Not Enough Efforts

While addressing the closing session, European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans expressed disappointment on not being able to come up with a strong agreement on emissions. He said the efforts to counter climate change were “not enough of a step forward for people and planet.”

The European Union had threatened:

The European Union had threatened to not participate in the negotiations in case it did not get better commitments on the issue of emissions. However, the European Union did not block the final statement after marathon talks that ended early Sunday.

While referring to the deal on setting up a “loss and damage” fund for vulnerable nations hit by climate-induced disasters, Timmermans said they were faced with “moral dilemma” as the deal was “not enough on mitigation.” – APP
