ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) issued non-bailable arrest warrants against the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, and former PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry on Tuesday in a case related to contempt of the electoral body and the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
The electoral watchdog had started contempt proceedings against Khan, Asad Umar, and Fawad Chaudhry for their statements against the election commission and its head.
A four-member commission presided over by Nisar Durrani, an ECP Sindh member, heard the contempt case. Despite being called in-person, Khan and Fawad failed to show up before the electoral authority. Asad Umar’s assistant attorney told the panel during the hearing that his client was engaged in other matters and had an upcoming medical appointment. He pleaded with the panel to excuse Asad Umar from the proceedings, stating that he had regularly attended the hearings.
Fawad Chaudhary and his attorney Faisal Chaudhary were also absent from the court. The hearing was adjourned till July 25.
