ISLAMABAD: The health of Georgia’s jailed ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili is deteriorating as a result of drastic weight loss, his doctors stated on Wednesday, in response to international demands for his release.
Pro-Western reformer Saakashvili, who is 55 years old, was arrested in 2021, days after secretly returning to the Caucasus country from exile.
Saakashvili’s imprisonment politically motivated, says rights groups
Since last year, he has been in hospital after refusing food for around 50 days to protest his imprisonment, which according to rights groups is politically motivated.
Once a jolly, larger-than-life personality, the former Georgian leader has become a shadow of his former self, his lawyers and doctors maintain, repeatedly informing about his deteriorating health.
