ISLAMABAD: COMSTECH, working together with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the Layton Rehmatullah Benevolent Trust, successfully completed 400 cataract surgeries in the Republic of Chad, the OIC’s least developed country in Africa.
This program aimed to meet the people of N’Djamena’s urgent eye care demands. A team of determined ophthalmologists from Pakistan organized and performed a free Eye Camp in harsh weather conditions over the course of eight days, developing a lasting influence on the lives of hundreds of people.
Much Needed eyes surgeries
According to COMSTECH, the goal of this camp was not only to deliver much-needed eye procedures but also to build local capacity through training and awareness campaigns. Pakistani ophthalmologists, who are well-known for their proficiency in the field, shared their knowledge and abilities with local doctors, teaching them the most recent cataract surgery techniques.
In addition, post-operative examinations were performed to ensure the best possible patient recovery. Launching an awareness campaign aimed at youth, emphasizing the significance of preventive steps to prevent avoidable blindness, was an important component of the effort.
COMSTECH aims to have a long-term impact on eye health by involving the younger generation and developing a culture of proactive eye care. In collaboration with IsDB, COMSTECH intends to offer a two-year specialized post-graduate training program in diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma surgery specialized to 16 African ophthalmologists at local institutes.
This program would lay a solid foundation of expertise on the African continent, enhancing eye care capacities and assuring the region’s long-term viability. The free eye camp was held at the local hospital in N’Djamena, due to the generous support of Chad’s Ministry of Health. The team of ophthalmologists worked tirelessly, equipped with modern equipment, to provide high-quality eye care services to those in need.
The people of N’Djamena praised the Pakistani doctors for their heartfelt dedication and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others, especially in difficult conditions. COMSTECH remains committed to expanding healthcare access and improving the quality of life in underserved communities.
This successful Eye Cataract Surgery Camp demonstrates the power of worldwide collaboration and collective efforts to make a long-term change in the lives of individuals and communities.
