NEW YORK: Amazon.com’s cloud division has garnered significant interest from thousands of customers eager to try out its artificial intelligence (AI) service, putting it in direct competition with tech giants Microsoft and Google, according to an executive at the company.
Amazon recently unveiled new AI tools, including a program for creating more conversational customer-service agents, technology access from startup Cohere, and a healthcare system for generating clinical notes after patient visits.
Vice President Swami Sivasubramanian revealed that organizations such as Sony, Ryanair, and Sun Life have already explored Amazon Bedrock, an AI service launched in April that enables businesses to develop applications with various AI models. The technology allows generative capabilities, enabling the creation of new text, images, and content on demand.
“Our mission is to make every company an AI company,” stated Sivasubramanian during an interview at a New York summit hosted by the cloud provider.
Amazon Bedrock competes with AI services announced by Microsoft and Google, both of which have attracted considerable public attention. Microsoft has invested in OpenAI, the startup behind ChatGPT and GPT-4, showcasing the fierce rivalry in the AI domain.
Amazon’s Growing Market Traction in AI Landscape
The disclosure of thousands of Bedrock users demonstrates Amazon’s growing appeal and market traction in the AI landscape. The company aims to offer a broader range of AI models to gain a competitive edge over its peers, including access to cutting-edge technology from startups Anthropic and Stability AI, as recently announced.
Amazon intends to make Bedrock widely accessible to all customers in the near future. However, the company is first addressing concerns related to cost allocation and enterprise controls.
As the largest cloud provider by revenue, Amazon’s ability to host vast amounts of customer data sets it apart from its competitors. Sivasubramanian mentioned that the company is working with businesses to understand their ramp-up schedules and ensure adequate chip access for their AI ambitions.
The cloud provider also previewed “Agents for Amazon Bedrock,” a feature that allows businesses to create chatbots capable of executing tasks and providing personalized answers based on proprietary data. This technology has captured considerable attention in Silicon Valley, with various potential applications across industries.
Additionally, Amazon unveiled AWS HealthScribe, a service tailored to the healthcare industry. It enables software vendors to build applications for transcribing and analyzing conversations between doctors and patients. 3M’s unit plans to leverage this service to expedite clinical documentation.
