BAGOTA, Columbia: Colombia’s Segunda Marquetalia group announced a unilateral ceasefire following peace talks in Caracas aimed at resolving the nation’s long-standing conflict.

This ceasefire represents a significant step towards achieving lasting peace, particularly amidst ongoing violence that has plagued Colombia for decades.

Segunda Marquetalia, originally a faction of the disbanded FARC rebels, returned to arms in 2019, citing unmet promises from the 2016 peace deal.

The Colombian government confirmed the agreement, highlighting commitments from the group to release hostages and safeguard civilians and officials in its operational areas.

A forthcoming presidential decree will formalize the ceasefire, initiating a process to de-escalate offensive military activities, with plans for further negotiations by July 20 to solidify a comprehensive de-escalation agreement.
