BOGOTA: President of Colombia Gustavo Petro has drawn a comparison between Israel’s targeting of Palestinians in Gaza and the Nazi persecution of Jews, Western media reported on Monday.

Reacting to a statement by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announcing a complete blockade of Gaza in a fight against Hamas, Petro said this is what the Nazis did to the Jews.

Democratic people cannot allow Nazism to reestablish

In his post at X, formerly Twitter, the Colombian president said the democratic people cannot allow Nazism to reestablish itself in global politics.

He said Gallant words amount to hate speech and will only bring massacre of Palestinians.

Gallant in a video message said that Israel was putting a complete siege on the Gaza Strip and its 2.3 million people, which he said meant no electricity, no food, no water, no gas.

Meanwhile the death toll in Gaza stirp has surged to 560, amidst continuous Israeli airstrikes targeting residential and commercial buildings, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

On Saturday Hamas resistance fighters stormed Israel with barrage of rocket fire. Since then the situation is tense in the beleaguered region.

Palestinian health ministry reported that 560 people have been martyred, and another 2,900 have been injured since the launch of Israeli airstrikes.

The relentless violence has left a devastating impact on the densely populated enclave, pushing medical facilities to their limits and leaving civilians in a state of constant fear.
