ULAANBAATAR: Thousands of people held a protest demonstration demanding justice after the arrests of several officials allegedly linked to a coal industry scandal in Mongolia.
The scandal has increased public anger in Mongolia, with the country already confronting the issue of high inflation and a weak economy due to Covid-19 and conflict in Ukraine.
Justice Minister and Coal Corruption
Mongolian Justice Minister on Thursday announced the arrest of ex-CEO of Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi along with seven others accused of laundering money from embezzled coal.

Thousands of people took to the roads in central Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and registered their protest. A protester said that the mining sector is a mess in the country as there is no accountability in this field.
Social media influencers and celebrities have joined the protest and calls for justice over the scandal of corruption.
A protester Purevsuren Lkhagvasuren said that they are fighting against these elements in the government and alleged that they are stealing their future.
Prime Minister’s stance on corruption
Earlier, Prime Minister Luvsannamsrai Oyun-Erdene held a meeting with protesters and promised to probe the scandal.
The prime minister said that a “gang” of politicians profited from coal and copper mines and had taken control of law enforcement and was making effort to stop a probe.

The Prime Minister urged protestors to give more time to officials to reveal more names involved in the scandal. – APP
