Close Contest Likely as Polling Underway in Bagh By-Election

BAGH, AJK: Tough contest is being expected as polling is underway for by-election in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly constituency LA-15 (Bagh-2).

The voting started at 8am and will continue till 5 in the evening without any break. The seat had fallen vacant following the disqualification of ex-prime minister AJK, Sardar Tanveer Ilyas by the AJK High Court in a contempt of court case.

The political observers are foreseeing a tough contest between Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidates.

Mushtaq Minhas, Raja Mohammad Zamir Khan and Sardar Qamar uz Zaman Khan are candidates of PML-N, PTI and PPP respectively. As many as 101,186 voters, including 53,108 males and 48,038 females, will exercise their right to vote in today’s (Thursday) by-election while 189 polling stations have been set up in the constituency out of which 29 polling stations have been declared as sensitive and 20 as highly sensitive.

The administration has deployed over 2,578 police officials and 600 Rangers and FC personnel to maintain law and order on the by-election day.
