FRANKFURT: Climate activists have sprayed the columns of Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate with orange paint to protest the use of fossil fuels by 2030, Western media reported on Sunday.
‘Last Generation’ sprayed Brandenburg Gate
Berlin police in a statement on X, formerly Twitter said that members of the so-called ‘Last Generation’ sprayed the columns of the Brandenburg Gate with orange paint.
It went on to say that police officers noted that a hydraulic lift was operating on the gate and they kept the protesters away from climbing the landmark gate. Over all 14 protesters have been booked by the police for property damage.
A Germany-based group ‘The Last Generation’, within the Europe-wide A22 network has come to the limelight with hundreds of road blocks by protesters who covered themselves with the tarmac.
Germany’s federal state launched a law-enforcement crackdown following tehri protest. The Last Generation posted pictures of the Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate spray-painted with orange color on X.
The group added that it would not end its protest unless a pivot is started. It demanded the world to stop using oil, natural gas and coal by 2030 at the latest.
Germany has planned to reach net-zero emissions by 2045, but it missed yearly targets for the past two years.
The Brandenburg Gate was built in 18th-century in Berlin by the Prussian king Frederick William II after suppressing the Dutch popular unrest. It is one of the iconic building of Germany and a major tourist attraction.
