BERLIN: Climate activist Greta Thunberg was arrested by police at a protest in western Germany, western media reported on Tuesday. She was protesting with activists demanding to stop the unrestricted village of Lützerath from being devastated for the extension of a coal mine.
Police said that she was not detained and would be freed following they checked her identity.
Police added that the climate activist was arrested following a group “rushed towards the ledge” of the coal mine.

All of those arrested in the group would be released without any charge once they (Police) checked their identities. Activists including Greta Thunberg said that burning coal demoralizes Germany’s efforts to decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
The government of Germany has promised to bring forward the phase out of coal in North Rhine-Westphalia to 2030.

The government says it needs to enlarge the mine in order to fulfill German energy demand as it deals with the disruption of gas from Moscow. Activists said that as many as 35000 protestors attended the protest.
