MOSCOW:  Russia will hold a presidential election from March 15 to 17 which incumbent President Vladimir Putin is likely to win, excepting an unexpected development. That will give the longest serving Kremlin head since Josef Stalin another six-year period in power.

When Elections will be held in Russia?

The polls will be held from March 15 to 17 in Russia. Election results will follow just afterwards and the winner candidate will be inaugurated in May. A remote online voting mechanism will be available for the first time in the country’s presidential election.

Incumbent Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely to easily win a landslide win and another six-year term. Opinion polls indicate Putin is supported by a majority of people in Russia, who view him as the type of leader needed to deal the West.

Putin, 71 was appointed acting president by Boris Yeltsin in 1999. He won the 2000 presidential polls with 53.0% of the vote and the 2004 elections with 71.3% of the vote. In 2008, Dmitry Medvedev ran for the office of the president while Putin served as prime minister before winning 63.6% of the vote in the 2012 presidential polls and 76.7% in 2018 elections. In 2020, amendments to the constitution were made which permitted President Putin to serve another two terms from 2024. It means he could stay in office until 2036.

President Putin is running against Communist Nikolai Kharitonov, Vladislav Davankov of the New People party and Leonid Slutsky, leader of the nationalist Liberal Democratic Party.  Around 112.3 million people will exercise their right to vote in the Russian Presidential elections.
