The Ministry of Defence on Friday issued a notification regarding the appointment of Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman of the new Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC)and Gen Asim Munir as the new Chief of the Army Staff (COAS).
The notification said that both the CJCSC and the COAS have been appointed to hold their respective offices for three years.
Earlier, President Dr Arif Alvi signed a summary sent by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding the appointment of Gen Asim Munir as the Chief of the Army Staff and Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.
The defence ministry also issued a notification regarding the retirement of outgoing Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Nadeem Raza, who will retire on November 27. Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza will assume charge of office on November 29.
Gen Asim Munir will assume charge as the Chief of the Army Staff on November 29, the day when the current Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa will retire.
On Thursday, the federal cabinet approved a summary to “seize the retirement tenure” of the newly appointed army chief and the Chairman Jint Chiefs of Staff Committee under the Army Act 1952, which has already set the retirement age of the chief of army staff at 64 years.
The Army Act 1952 empowers the prime minister to extend the service tenures of the army chief and the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee by three years.
Earlier Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Arif Alvi held separate meetings with the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza in Islamabad
