BAKU: The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has appointed the CIS Secretary-General Sergey Lebedev as the head of the observer mission for Azerbaijan’s upcoming early presidential election, reported Trend through the CIS Executive Committee.
The decision to appoint Lebedev has received approval from the Council of Permanent Representatives of the CIS Participating States at the statutory and other bodies of the CIS.
At the invitation of the Azerbaijan Government, the CIS observer mission will oversee the electoral campaign. Invitations have been extended to CIS countries, requesting the submission of candidates for their representatives to the mission, said the committee.
The committee said that consistent with previous campaigns, the mission’s activities will adhere to principles of political neutrality, non-interference in the electoral process, and respect for the internal affairs of the state in strict accordance with national legislation.
On December 7, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan issued a decree scheduling an extraordinary presidential election in Azerbaijan for February 7, 2024.
