LONDON: Cillian Murphy has become the favourite actor to play the role of Lord Voldemort in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series as fans and former franchise stars have already thrown their weight behind the Irish actor for the iconic role.

The actor known for his roles in Oppenheimer and Peaky Blinders has been widely discussed as a potential star for the Dark Lord, which was previously portrayed by Ralph Fiennes in the films.

According to Lad Bible, ever since HBO announced the series in April 2023, rumours have been circulating about who will take on the role of the main villain, with Cillian Murphy’s name frequently mentioned in fan discussions.

As more cast members have been confirmed, speculation has only grown, with fans eagerly imagining Murphy bringing his signature intensity to the character.

One fan remarked, “This could cook,” while another claimed, “He’s literally the only actor who can pull off Voldemort without CGI.”

Ralph Fiennes has supported Murphy in taking over the role.

Fiennes, during a show, Watch What Happens Live in December, praised Murphy as a “fantastic actor” and expressed his support for him to act as the new Lord Voldemort.

Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Harry Potter films, has also voiced his admiration for Murphy, adding that he would be thrilled to see the actor take on the role.

As the excitement grows, fans are keenly awaiting an official casting announcement.

The show, developed under the direction of showrunner Francesca Gardiner (Succession) and executive producer Mark Mylod, promises to offer a deeper exploration of J.K. Rowling’s original novels.

Rowling herself will serve as an executive producer, with HBO assuring that the series will be a “faithful adaptation” of the beloved book series.

Filming for the series is expected to start this summer, with the first season airing as early as next year.
