BEIJING: Chinese scientists from Peking University have found a potential new medicine that may bolster diabetes treatment effectiveness.

Scientists believe that Bacteroides spp. microbial dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) from the gut microbiota is a key therapeutic target for managing type II diabetes, as it can degrade the host’s glucagon and assist in compromising glucose homeostasis, according to Xinhua.

Scientists said that enriched peptidase in the patient’s body reduces the clinical efficiency of Sitagliptin, a mainly used diabetes treatment, as Sitagliptin cannot effectively inhibit DPP4 activity.

Research to Help Understand Diabetes

The study revealed that the finding could have considerable influence on further understanding the illness and enhancing the effectiveness of related drug treatments.
