BEIJING: Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang emphasized the need for China and the United States to foster a healthy development track in their bilateral relations and work together to ensure the full and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement on Tuesday.
In a meeting with US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, Li Qiang stressed the importance of practicing multilateralism and adhering to the goals and principles outlined in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.
Li underlined the responsibility of developed countries to lead the way in emissions reduction and fulfill their financial commitments, while urging developing countries to contribute within their capacities, in line with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities.
The Chinese Prime Minister called for the sharing of scientific and technological achievements and the promotion of global green and low-carbon transitions. He also appealed to developed nations to provide increased technical support to developing countries.
China Wishes Positive Cooperation with US
Li expressed hope that China and the US would maintain a cooperative spirit, respect each other’s core concerns, find common ground through extensive communication, explore pragmatic institutionalized cooperation, and bolster the multilateral process of climate governance.
Acknowledging that the US and China are the world’s top two economies and carbon emitters, John Kerry affirmed the US’s desire for stable ties with China. He expressed willingness to strengthen cooperation with China in addressing pressing global challenges, such as climate change, and to facilitate the success of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The meeting between Li Qiang and John Kerry underscores the significance of collaboration between China and the US in combating climate change.
