KABUL, Afghanistan: The Ministry of Water and Energy of Afghanistan announced that a Chinese company is poised to invest in the construction of large-scale hydroelectric dams in Kunar province, specifically Shal, Sagi, and Sartaq. This development follows a recent meeting between Abdul Latif Mansoor, the acting Minister of Water and Energy, and Chinese representatives in Kabul.
The Chinese company has expressed strong interest in these projects, signaling their readiness to sign a cooperation agreement and commence work promptly. Acting Minister Mansoor welcomed this investment, highlighting the potential of the Kunar River’s capacity to generate significant electricity. He noted that, if completed, these dams could enable Afghanistan to export electricity to neighboring countries, thus enhancing regional energy cooperation.
Details regarding the Chinese company and the estimated costs of the dam construction have not yet been disclosed. This investment aligns with China’s ongoing commitment to Afghanistan’s development, which includes various projects in mining, infrastructure, and energy sectors. The hydroelectric projects in Kunar are expected to substantially improve the region’s power supply and support Afghanistan’s economic growth by bolstering its energy infrastructure.
