BEIJING: A nineteen-year-old patient has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at a Beijing’s hospital, a rare case of the disease which is mostly found in aged people.
Jia Longfei, a doctor in the neurology department at the Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, said that the patient started to develop symptoms associated with memory disorders at age seventeen, when he experienced problems remembering events that happened the day before.
The hospital carried out several tests on the patient, including a PET scan and cerebrospinal fluid index examination, which are among the most authoritative means for diagnosing Alzheimer.
Results of the scans revealed that he was suffering from abnormal cerebrospinal fluid indexes and mild hippocampal atrophy.
Alzheimer’s factors
Jia said Alzheimer is caused by factors such as the physical condition of a patient, lifestyle, and genetics.
In recent years, there have been more cases of young people developing Alzheimer at a younger age. Some people with the early-onset disease have been found to have gene mutations. – APP
