BEIJING: In a bid to enhance its global cotton supply chains, China’s Winner Group, a prominent cotton product manufacturer, is exploring collaborative opportunities with cotton-producing nations, including Pakistan.

The interim CEO of WinnerMedical, Ms. Zhang Yan, expressed the company’s interest in importing cotton and forging partnerships with leading cotton-producing countries globally. This move aligns with Winner Group’s response to China’s “Belt and Road” initiative, emphasizing an extended trade network worldwide.

Despite being the world’s fifth-largest cotton producer, Pakistan faces challenges in its domestic cotton industry, ranging from the need for research and development of high-quality cotton varieties to innovative approaches in cotton product manufacturing.

Winner Group sees potential in foreign investments to revitalize Pakistan’s cotton sector, considering the nation’s status as a major raw cotton exporter and the third-largest consumer globally.

The easing of the COVID-19 pandemic witnessed a significant increase in Pakistan’s cotton harvest, marking an 81% year-on-year rise. However, adverse weather conditions and pest-related challenges, particularly the whitefly, have led to skepticism about meeting annual production targets.

To address these challenges, collaboration between Chinese enterprises and academic institutions has proven fruitful, as exemplified by Winner Group’s subsidiary, Purcotton, partnering with Huazhong Agricultural University for cotton research.

Winner Group’s success story in transforming from a small manufacturer into a global brand offers insights for potential cooperation within the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Ms. Zhang Yan emphasizes the importance of learning from outstanding partners and aligning with global enterprises for mutual development. Winner Group’s innovations in cotton technology, such as the water-punched non-woven fabric, have not only enhanced economic efficiency but also contributed to ecological sustainability.

The company’s unique business model focuses on “end-to-end connectivity of the cotton cultivation and production chain.” Winner Group believes that comprehensive cooperation in cotton planting and production between China and Pakistan could unlock new opportunities for increasing cotton yields in Pakistan and promoting foreign exchange through cotton product exports.

The potential collaboration reflects a strategic move towards strengthening global cotton supply chains and fostering economic growth in both nations.
