KYIV: President Volodymyr Zelensky was likely to receive a special envoy from China on Wednesday who arrived in Kyiv to promote Beijing-led talks to end the war in Ukraine.
China’s special diplomat, Li Hui, arrived in the Ukrainian capital KYIV on Tuesday for two days of negotiations with authorities, part of a European visit to promote China’s plan to settle the conflict with Russia.
A top-ranking Ukrainian official told a foreign news agency on condition not to be named that a meeting between Li and Zelensky was expected in the afternoon.
Li, the highest-ranking Chinese envoy to visit the war-hit country since its conflict with Moscow started in February last year, arrived in Kyiv 3 weeks after Zelensky spoke by telephone to Chinese President Xi Jinping.
On Tuesday, Kyiv said that Ukraine did not need “mediation for the sake of mediation.”
China communicates with all sides
China has said that the aim of the visit is to communicate with all sides on the political settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.
