BEIJING: The Red Cross Society of China has decided to provide the Afghan Red Crescent with $200,000 in cash as emergency humanitarian assistance to aid its disaster and rescue relief efforts, state-run media reported on Monday.
A pair of 6.2-magnitude earthquakes shook Afghanistan on Saturday afternoon local time, resulting in substantial casualties and significant property damage.
As of Sunday night, the death toll from the earthquakes in western Afghanistan’s Herat and nearby provinces has climbed to 2,445, according to Herat authorities.

The Zanda Jan district in Herat is the most severely affected area, with Mawlawi Musa Ashari, Herat’s provincial director for the National Disaster Management Authority, stating that 13 villages have been “completely destroyed.” —APP
