ROME: Qu Dongyu, the current Director-General of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has been re-elected for a second term on Sunday. As the sole candidate standing for the role, Qu secured 168 out of 182 votes in a ballot held in Rome.
Qu, a former Chinese government minister, was nominated for the position by Beijing. His re-election means he will continue to lead the FAO for another four-year term starting from August 1. The move is viewed as part of China’s efforts to increase its representation in key international organizations.
Trained as a biologist, Qu previously served as the vice-minister of agriculture in China before assuming the leadership of the UN agency in 2019. FAO directors are allowed to hold the position for a maximum of two consecutive terms.
FAO’s Role in Addressing Global Food Security
The re-election took place during the FAO Conference, which is set to run until July 7. The FAO plays a crucial role in addressing global food security, promoting sustainable agriculture practices, and supporting the eradication of hunger and malnutrition worldwide.
Qu’s continued leadership of the FAO will shape the organization’s agenda in the coming years as it addresses pressing challenges such as climate change, food production, and distribution. With his background in agriculture and experience in international governance, Qu will play a significant role in advancing the FAO’s mission and promoting global cooperation in the realm of food and agriculture.
