China’s Foldable Smartphone Shipments Jump 173% in Second Quarter

BEIJING: The foldable smartphone market has seen significant growth in China, with shipments jumping 173% year on year (YoY) to reach 1.26 million units in the second quarter of 2023.

In the first half of the current year, China shipped 2.27 million foldable phones, marking a 102%  increase from the corresponding period last year, according to a report published by the global market research firm International Data Corporation.

Smartphones’ leading manufacturers

Huawei has maintained its leading position in the domestic foldable smartphone market with a share of 43% in the second quarter of the current year, while the other giant Vivo climbed to second position, occupying a market share of 19.7%, according to Xinhua.

Oppo secured a market share of 15.9%, ranking 3rdin the second quarter, data from the IDC shows.

IDC said that since the introduction of foldable mobile phones, the niche market has maintained speedy growth and is currently the sole segment that is still showing an upward trend within the smartphone market.
