BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday that China is willing to collaborate with the United States as both sides manage their differences and work together to respond to global challenges, according to Chinese state media.
Whether or not the United States and China could establish the “right” way of getting along would be crucial to the world, Xi said in a letter delivered at an annual dinner of New York-headquartered National Committee on United States-China Relations.
Xi’s call for a more stable and constructive relationship between the two nations is founded on the principles of “mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and mutually beneficial cooperation.” This appeal precedes an important visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Washington later in the week.
Wang’s visit, scheduled from Thursday to Saturday, represents the highest-level in-person engagement between the two nations in anticipation of a potential meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and President Xi, expected to take place in San Francisco during the November Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

Several high-ranking U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, engaged in discussions with their Chinese counterparts in Beijing. Washington’s primary objective has been to prevent the intense competition between the world’s two largest economies and their disagreements on various matters, such as trade, Taiwan, and the South China Sea, from escalating into conflict.
Chinese observers believe that Wang’s visit may pave the way for a potential meeting between the heads of both states. However, they also emphasize that Washington must take tangible steps to address Beijing’s concerns and demonstrate sincerity, as highlighted in a commentary by China’s state-controlled Global Times.
