BEIJING: Beijing has strongly denounced what it deems as “illegal” US sanctions, a day after Washington introduced fresh measures aimed at individuals and organizations, including those situated in China and Hong Kong, for their alleged support of Iran’s missile and drone programs.

US authorities have imposed new sanctions on individuals and entities in Iran, Hong Kong, China, and Venezuela, accusing them of “facilitating Iran’s ballistic missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) programs.”

In response to these sanctions, foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that China consistently opposes the imposition of unilateral sanctions by the US, characterizing them as illegal. She went on to emphasize China’s unwavering commitment to protecting the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies and citizens.

The US Treasury Department announced sanctions on 11 individuals, eight entities, and one vessel. According to the Treasury, those targeted have provided significant support to Iran in the development and dissemination of missiles and drones.

Brian Nelson, the Treasury’s undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, remarked, “Iran’s irresponsible decision to continue the proliferation of destructive UAVs and other weaponry perpetuates numerous conflicts in regions across the globe.”
