BEIJING: China has criticized the United States for using technological issues as a weapon, claiming that such actions are detrimental to everyone involved.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning condemned Washington’s latest export restrictions on advanced technologies, stating that Beijing opposes the politicization and weaponization of economic, trade, scientific, and technological matters.
Mao Ning’s remarks came in response to the US Department of Commerce’s announcement of new restrictions on technologies including quantum computing and semiconductor manufacturing. According to China Daily, Mao emphasized that creating barriers to normal economic and trade exchanges benefits no one.
On Thursday, the US Department of Commerce released an interim final rule (IFR) imposing controls on critical and emerging technologies. This rule includes restrictions on quantum computing and semiconductor manufacturing, aimed at strengthening international partnerships and aligning US export controls with rapidly evolving technologies that could threaten national security if misused.
In recent years, the US has also restricted the export of advanced chips to China, prompting Beijing to respond with its own export controls on raw materials essential for chip production.
