BEIJING: China on Monday said that Russia will take part in an upcoming military drill that will be held in the Pacific Ocean later this month.
China’s Ministry of National Defence in a statement said that the Russian military will send delegations from the navy and air force to the North-Joint 2024 exercise, which will take place in and around the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk this September.
“This exercise aims to deepen the strategic cooperation level between the Chinese and Russian militaries and enhance their ability to jointly respond to security threats,” the statement added.
It said the Russian and Chinese navies will hold a fifth joint maritime patrol, saying that Beijing will also take part in the Ocean-2024 strategic exercise, which will be organized by Moscow.
The statement did not notify the exact date of the North-Joint 2024 exercise.
The statement from China comes weeks after Japan claimed that a Chinese military spy plane violated its airspace for the first time. According to reports the plane entered Japanese airspace above the waters of the East China Sea, near islands of Nagasaki province.
China and Russia recently also carried out a joint military exercise in the waters and airspace near Zhanjiang, in south China’s Guangdong Province.
