BEIJING: China has strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack targeting Chinese engineers in Gwadar, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the enduring friendship between China and Pakistan and the continued development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin made this assertion during a regular briefing at the International Press Center (IPC) in Beijing, following the summer holidays. He emphasized that any attempt to undermine the strong bond between China and Pakistan and disrupt the progress of the CPEC initiative will not succeed.
Wang Wenbin provided details of the incident, stating that on August 13, a convoy of Chinese engineers fell victim to a terrorist attack involving roadside bombs and gunshots. Fortunately, no Chinese citizens were killed or injured in the attack.
Significance of CPEC for Regional Development
While strongly condemning the terrorist acts, China has called on Pakistan to hold the perpetrators accountable for their actions. The Chinese Embassy and Consulate in Pakistan have taken swift emergency response measures. They have also urged Chinese citizens, companies, and institutions involved in projects within Pakistan to maintain vigilance, enhance security measures, closely monitor the security situation, and prioritize safety.
The spokesperson reiterated China’s unwavering commitment to working collaboratively with Pakistan to counter the threats of terrorism. The two nations are determined to protect the safety of Chinese personnel, institutions, and projects within Pakistani territory. The China-Pakistan partnership remains resolute in the face of such challenges.
The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a pivotal component of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and represents a significant commitment to economic and infrastructure development between the two nations. The CPEC has garnered international attention for its potential to reshape regional connectivity and enhance trade and investment opportunities.
