BEIJING: China reaffirmed its longstanding position on the Kashmir issue ahead of “Yaum-e-Istehsal-e-Kashmir” (Kashmir Exploitation Day) and urged for a proper and peaceful resolution of the dispute under the United Nations (UN) Charter, relevant UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, and bilateral agreements.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized China’s clear and consistent stance on the Kashmir issue, stating that it is a historical dispute between India and Pakistan that should be resolved through peaceful means, in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions.

India Revoked Special Status of Kashmir

The statement comes on the fourth anniversary of India’s unilateral and illegal actions in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) on August 5, 2019. On that day, the Indian government, led by the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), revoked Articles 370 and 35-A of the Indian Constitution, revoking the special status of Kashmir.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s statement coincides with the observance of Youm-e-Istehsal on August 5 by the entire Pakistani nation. The day serves as a protest against India’s actions, which are perceived as an attempt to alter the demographic makeup of Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and erode the distinct identity of the Kashmiri people.
