ISLAMABAD: China and Pakistan are going to establish a joint research Centre in October to boost the study of Earth sciences and sci-tech exchanges, an official in charge of the center’s preparatory work said during the 2023 China International Fair for Trade in Services.

According to Hong Tianhua, the “China-Pakistan Joint Research Centre on Earth Sciences” would be built in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital, in October as a high-level scientific and technology innovation platform between the two nations to strengthen sci-tech collaboration and talent development.

According to Xinhua, the Centre was founded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, and is sponsored by the CAS’s Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment and Pakistan’s Quaid-i-Azam University.

Its establishment also includes CAS-affiliated institutes and other Chinese research institutions, as well as Pakistani universities such as the University of Peshawar. Natural disaster and risk management; geologic structures and tectonic processes; climate change and environmental effects; and resources, environment, and green development will be the focus of the center’s research. The Centre will also act as a matchmaker between Chinese and Pakistani enterprises and institutions’ investment and technologies.

Hong added that they hope to build a high-level platform for sci-tech cooperation between the two countries, and then gradually extend it to neighboring countries to provide human resources support and sci-tech for the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
