BEIJING: China’s eagerly awaited torch relay for the postponed Asian Games commenced on Friday, with thousands of spectators thronging the streets of the host city, Hangzhou. The event unfolded against the backdrop of an excited crowd that waved miniature national flags, gathering around the city’s picturesque West Lake several hours ahead of the 9:00 am launch ceremony.

The inaugural moments saw two high-ranking officials jointly igniting the elegant metal torch, which then embarked on a symbolic journey through the city’s thoroughfares, guided by a procession of national luminaries.

The upcoming Asian Games, initially slated for September of the previous year, are set to commence in Hangzhou, a city renowned for its graceful temples, canals, and bridges, on September 23. The Games had been delayed due to China’s stringent zero-Covid protocols, which have since been relaxed.

The torch relay will traverse 11 cities within the region, with over 2,000 individuals participating, culminating in its return to Hangzhou on September 20.

Participants in the inaugural relay on Friday sported matching white tracksuits adorned with red accents. Notable figures in the procession included former swimming world champion Luo Xuejuan and Daniel Zhang, the CEO of Alibaba, the Hangzhou-based tech giant.

Hangzhou resident Shao Yan, 37, shared her experience of the event, saying, “Lots of people were already here when we got here at 6:30 am. I hope the Asian Games will be held smoothly, and we have more of these kinds of activities in the future.”

Meanwhile, others in the expansive crowds had traveled from distant locales to partake in the festivities. Among them was Peng, a tourist hailing from the southern island province of Hainan, who expressed his excitement and pride, stating, “I felt very excited after watching it. It shows that our country is very powerful.”

This year’s edition of the Asian Games is slated to be the most extensive in history, boasting the participation of 12,500 athletes representing 45 countries and regions.
