BEIJING: China issued its highest-level red rainstorm warning for parts of Guangdong province on Tuesday, according to a local weather agency, as the region grappled with heavy rainfall.

The meteorological observatory in the megacity of Shenzhen reported “heavy to very heavy downpours” in listed areas, emphasizing the significant risk of flash floods.

Recent torrential rains have pounded Guangdong province, leading to swollen rivers and concerns about severe flooding that state media described as occurring “once in a century”.

State news agency Xinhua reported that 110,000 residents in Guangdong had been relocated since the onset of heavy rainfall over the weekend.

Tragically, four individuals lost their lives, and 10 were reported missing, as per Xinhua’s coverage.

While China regularly faces extreme weather conditions, recent years have seen the country affected by severe floods, prolonged droughts, and record-breaking heatwaves.

The impact of climate change, driven by human-emitted greenhouse gases, has intensified the frequency and severity of extreme weather events worldwide, with China ranking as the world’s largest emitter of such gases.
