BEIJING: China is investigating one of its nationals accused of spying for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Ministry of State Security said on Monday.

The 39-year-old Chinese national, surnamed Hao, was a cadre at the ministry and had gone to study in Japan, where the spies were recruited, the ministry said. Hao’s gender was not revealed.

The statement came less than two weeks after the department said it had uncovered another citizen also suspected of spying for the CIA after being recruited in Italy.

The official statement also mentioned Hao met a US embassy staff name Ted while processing a visa application and later invited Hao for dinner, presenting him with gifts and asking Hao’s help in writing the paper. Ted promised to pay for the document written by Hao as per the statement..

Ted later introduced Hao to a colleague named Li Jun before his term at the embassy in Japan finished. Li and Hao then maintained a cooperative relationship, the document added.

Before Hao finished his studies, Li revealed that he was a CIA operative based in Tokyo and “incited Hao to revolt” and told Hao to return to China and work for a “core and critical unit”.

Hao signed an espionage agreement and accepted assessments and training from the United States, according to the statement.

The department said that upon his return, Hao worked in the national office “as requested by the CIA” and provided intelligence to the CIA while collecting American salaries.

Relations between the United States and China have soured in recent years over a number of issues, including national security. Washington has accused Beijing of espionage and cyber attacks, a charge China has denied. China has also said it is threatened by spies.

China this month urged its citizens to engage in counter-espionage after expanding its anti-espionage law in July, alarming the United States.
