BEIJING: Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) and Wuhan Qingfa Hesheng Seed Co. Ltd signed a letter of intent this month on spreading MNP marker technology—a system for identifying plant varieties—in Pakistan.
The technique was created by Jianghan University in China and has the ability to create a DNA database of seeds as well as identify seed variations at the molecular level, improving the protection of seed owners’ intellectual property rights and lowering the prevalence of fake and adulterated seeds.
Pakistan crop production marred by fake seeds
The company’s Director of Pakistan Business, Zhou Xusheng, claims that crop production in Pakistan has been compromised by phony, subpar seeds. According to China Economic Net (CEN), the MNP marker technology will make it easier and more effective to determine the legitimacy of seeds.
The system can swiftly identify the intellectual property owners of imported germplasm resources, tell authentic varieties from fakes, and promote innovation in the seed business.
Numerous crops to benefit
Numerous crops, including potato, sugar cane, rice, maize, soybean, cotton, peanut, millet, and vegetable crops, among others, can benefit from the use of this MNP technology, whether they are propagated vegetatively or generatively.
Additionally, according to Zhou, it will make it easier to approve new varieties, direct seed breeding, and advance seed quality and protection.
