BEIJING: China’s top diplomat Wang Yi met with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in Beijing on Monday, where the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace along the border and strengthening overall bilateral relations, People’s Daily Online reported.
Wang Yi, who serves as Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs and is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, underscored that the leaders of both nations had reached important consensus on improving bilateral ties during their meeting in Kazan, Russia, last year.
Wang said China and India should remain committed to the understanding that they are opportunities for each other’s development, not threats, and should regard each other as partners rather than rivals. He urged both sides to stay on the path of good-neighbourly relations and friendship, foster mutually beneficial cooperation, and draw upon the wisdom of their ancient civilisations to manage sensitive issues and preserve peace and stability in the border areas.
Ajit Doval, who also serves as India’s Special Representative on the China-India boundary question, acknowledged the significance of the consensus reached by both countries’ leaders, saying it had charted the course for future relations. He noted that India and China share aligned strategic goals, with national development being a top priority for both.
Doval further said that India is willing to deepen coordination with China on multilateral platforms and fully supports Beijing, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), in successfully hosting its upcoming summit.
He expressed confidence that as two major Asian powers, China and India can contribute meaningfully to global peace and development.
