WASHINGTON: China’s top diplomat hoped Thursday for more stable ties with Washington after months of turmoil as he paid a rare visit to the United States to prepare a possible trip by Chinses leader Xi Jinping.

US President Joe Biden has extended an invitation President Xi to San Francisco to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi started by meeting US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who told him that he looked forward to “constructive talks” that will also include more formal talks.

Wang Yi told Blinken, who also paid a visit to China in June, that Beijing wanted to “decrease misunderstanding.” Wang added, “We seek to increase cooperation that will benefit the two sides so that we can stabilize Sino-US ties and return them to the track of stable, healthy, and sustainable development,”.

On Friday, Chinese Foreign Minister will also hold talks with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan at the White House. The negotiation with China comes as the US enters an election season in which President Biden’s predecessor Trump, who is seeking to return to the office, has made criticism of China a signature policy.
