ISLAMABAD: In a major easing of its zero-Covid policy, China has decided that people with asymptomatic or mild Covid-19 will quarantine at home rather than in quarantine camps as the country departs from lockdown policy.

Such patients will now be able to isolate at home and self-report test results. The change in the protocol comes just a week after civil protests erupted against pandemic controls across the nation. Centralised quarantine was deeply unpopular because it separated families and saw people forced into facilities. Videos have shown guards dragging people out of their homes all year, including viral footage of a man from Hangzhou last week, which showed him fighting off officials.

China moving away from lockdown policy

It shows that China is slowly moving from its zero-Covid policy and trying to “live with the virus,” just like the rest of the world. This comes as China is seeing its biggest wave of infections yet. The downgrade also comes after China saw its biggest protests in decades in late November, with crowds taking to the streets in several cities to criticise restrictions and lockdowns.

Some people criticised and protested in some places against President Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party. After the mass protests from 24 to 26 November, Chinese authorities began loosening their zero-Covid policy and have relaxed lockdowns in some cities.
