BEIJING: The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday that a high-ranking official from their Department of Arms Control Affairs will lead a delegation in nuclear discussions between China and the United States.
The official’s name remains undisclosed.
Spokesperson Wang Wenbin stated that next week in Washington, China and the United States will engage in arms control and non-proliferation consultations at the director-general level, responding to a report indicating China’s agreement to nuclear arms control talks with the U.S.
According to the mutually agreed-upon plans, Wang elaborated that both China and the United States will engage in dialogue and exchanges on a wide array of topics, including the implementation of international arms control treaties.
These talks follow closely after a meeting between Foreign Minister Wang Yi and senior U.S. officials, during which both parties consented to a series of forthcoming consultations.
Wang also met with U.S. President Joe Biden, a meeting the White House described as a valuable opportunity to maintain open lines of communication between these two geopolitical rivals with significant policy differences.
