China Claims to Uncover Alleged CIA Spy

BEIJING: China has uncovered an alleged spy, a Chinese citizen, working for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), state media reported on Friday.

The Chinese national was passing over secret military information to the CIA after he was offered US immigration.

Zeng, was sent to Italy for more education and became familiar with a US embassy official, said the CCTV report.

Zeng signed a spy agreement with the US and got training before coming back to China to carry out his activities.

According to reports, action has been taken against Zeng.

Early this month, the state security ministry said the nation should be encouraged to join a counter-espionage drive and create ways for individuals to report mysterious activity.

Last month, China announced an anti-espionage law restricting the transfer of information related to national security and interests to others.

In recent years, China has arrested and detained dozens of Chinese and foreign nationals on espionage charges, including an executive at a Japanese pharmaceutical company.

Australian journalist Cheng Lei, has also been detained by China since September 2020 for passing on secret information to another country.
