SHANGHAI: Top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi said on Sunday that China and the United States (US) must pursue dialogue rather than military confrontation and avoid the mistakes made during the Cold War.

Wang Yi said this in his first public comments since his appointment as the Communist Party’s foreign affairs office’s head.

Wang was replaced as foreign minister of China on Friday by Qin Gang, China’s former ambassador to the US. Still, he was widely expected to get a prominent role in foreign policy after his promotion in October to China’s top decision-making body.

In an article published in the official Party journal Seeking Truth, Wang Yi urged major nations to “set an example” against several challenges, citing China’s strengthened collaboration with Russia over 2022.

China-United States relations

“Over the past year, China has unremittingly explored the right way for the two major countries of China and the US to get along with each other,” Wang Yi wrote.

“The two countries should formulate a way of getting along with peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and win-win cooperation and put US-China relations back on the right track of stability and health,” the diplomat said.

Wang Yi’s term as foreign minister saw a sharp rise in tensions between China and the US on several issues ranging from Ukraine and trade to Taiwan.

Wang Yi said in his Sunday essay that Taiwan remained at the “core of core interests of China” and the “foundation” on which the political relationship of China with the United States is built.
