BEIJING: China has asked the United States to stop harassing Chinese students in the country in the name of national security, Chinese media reported.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin expressing his views at a news briefing said the United States has interrogated, detained and even deported Chinese students without giving them any reason or charges against them.

China opposes politically motivated moves

He said China strongly opposes such moves motivated by political purposes.

The diplomat said People-to-people exchanges between China-U.S. in the academic, educational, scientific and technological areas are essential.

The spokesperson said despite the US claims to support educational and people-to-people contact, has continued the wrong practice of the previous administration thwarting Chinese students’ plans to study in the United States.

Wang noted that the strategy of the US hurts the lawful rights and interests of Chinese students and affects normal people-to-people exchanges and educational cooperation.
