China Appoints Hua Chunying as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs

BEIJING: China’s State Council on Monday appointed Hua Chunying as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Born in 1970, Hua is an alumna of Nanjing University. Her professional journey includes roles in the former Department of Western European Affairs, the Department of European Affairs, and the Information Department, along with postings at the Chinese Embassy in Singapore and the Chinese Mission to the EU, as indicated by public records.
Between 2012 and 2019, Hua served as the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Press, Communication, and Public Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). She is the fifth female spokesperson for the MFA, succeeding Li Jinhua, Fan Huijuan, Zhang Qiyue, and Jiang Yu.
Following Lu Kang’s tenure, in July 2019, Hua Chunying assumed the role of Director-General of the Ministry’s Department of Press, Communication, and Public Diplomacy. Later, in October 2021, she was appointed Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, marking her ascent in diplomatic leadership.
Hua is the third female Deputy Foreign Minister, joining the ranks of Wang Hairong and Fu Ying.
