BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping announced on Tuesday that China will strengthen cooperation with Algeria in several crucial sectors, including infrastructure and petrochemicals.
During a meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in Beijing, the two leaders discussed expanding economic ties between the North African nation and the world’s second-largest economy.
President Xi described Algeria as a natural partner, highlighting the strategic importance of the country due to its location on the Mediterranean Sea. Both leaders agreed to deepen collaboration in the minerals and agriculture sectors, as well as in aerospace, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and other areas, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
Bilateral Agreements Between China and Algeria
The meeting between President Xi and President Tebboune led to the signing of various bilateral agreements, encompassing telecommunications, sustainable urban development, and trade. These agreements further strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership established between China and Algeria in 2014, making Algeria the first Arab nation to form such a partnership with China.
President Tebboune, on his first visit to China since assuming office in 2019, expressed Algeria’s commitment to deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership with China, with the aim of promoting the country’s economic and social development. He also expressed Algeria’s willingness to collaborate closely with China on strategic cooperation in international and regional affairs.
Prior to his visit to China, President Tebboune had recently traveled to Russia, where he appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin for support in Algeria’s bid to become a member of BRICS, a group of emerging markets consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
The strengthened cooperation between China and Algeria underscores their shared commitment to enhancing economic ties and exploring new areas of partnership. These efforts are expected to contribute to the mutual development and prosperity of both nations.
