ANFIELD: Real Madrid staged a stunning comeback from two goals down to earn a marvelous 5-2 victory over Liverpool at Anfield. Liverpool soon took the lead when Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah put them 2-0 up inside 14 minutes while manager Jurgen Klopp was fist-pumping at the stands to whip up the fervour.

But Real fought back as Vinicius Junior netted twice to equal the score before the break, the second coming from a failed clearance by Alisson. Carlo Ancelotti’s men clinched the lead for the first time less than three minutes into the second half, with Eder Militao heading home a Luka Modric free kick. Karim Benzema scored two more goals as the visitors clinched the match, giving Liverpool a mountain to climb in the second leg in Spain on March 15.

‘End of an era’ for Liverpool

Fans and football legends are of the view that Liverpool’s humiliating 5-2 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid is an emphatic proof that the Reds have reached the end of an era. Real Madrid have all but Liverpool, who conceded five goals in the Champions League for the first time in club history, still remain in the competition ahead of the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 15.
