PESHAWAR: As Eidul Azha approaches, Peshawar’s Lala Qala cattle market buzzes with activity, yet buyers like Qasier Khan, a retired Wapda employee, face daunting challenges in securing sacrificial animals at affordable prices.

The surge in prices, exacerbated by inadequate facilities and the scorching heat, leaves many buyers disillusioned.

Inter-provincial traders, like Ibrahim Shah from Nowshera, grapple with high transportation costs and animal illnesses, further straining the market’s stability. Despite the rise of online trading as an alternative, traditional markets struggle to adapt, impacting sales and purchases.

Amidst these challenges, calls for government intervention to regulate prices grow louder. Buyers and traders alike urge the government to take action, emphasizing the need for measures to ensure fair pricing and market stability.

Despite the obstacles, the spirit of Eidul Azha perseveres, with millions expected to participate in the tradition of sacrifice. Dr. Aftab Ahmad, Director of Livestock and Dairy Development KP, highlights the vital role of Punjab in meeting the region’s demand for sacrificial animals, underscoring the importance of importation to maintain availability at reasonable rates.

However, challenges persist, with cattle smuggling posing a significant threat to market dynamics. Zahid Shinwari, former President of the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, advocates for regulatory measures to curb smuggling and emphasizes the need for regional cooperation to address supply shortages.

As preparations for Eidul Azha intensify, vigilance in monitoring animal health becomes paramount. Dr. Aftab stresses the importance of prompt action in cases of illness to prevent the spread of diseases like lumpy skin disease.

In navigating the complexities of Eidul Azha preparations, the resilient spirit of the people of Peshawar shines through. Despite economic uncertainties and logistical challenges, they remain steadfast in upholding the traditions of sacrifice and community.
