ISLAMABAD/ N’DJAMENA: Chad authorities have foiled a plot to attack the government and undermine its constitution.
According to the Chad authorities, a human rights activist and soldiers were involved in the plot to topple the government, according to the Associated Press.
The plot foiled last month
Government spokesperson Aziz Mahamat Saleh said that the plot was foiled, and the arrests were made last month. The arrested plotters were produced before a court in the capital N’Djamena.
The spokesperson said that the human rights activist Baradine Berdei Targuio has been charged with violating national security and illegally possessing weapons.
Tensions in the West African nation have recently risen in months since Mahamat Idriss Deby was declared the head of state after his father’s death in April 2021.
The new leader, Déby did not follow the constitution’s line of succession, and opposition leaders who first called for a coup later accepted him as an interim leader.
